IGN's Top 100 Games of All Time

Post by Smoove_B »

You can see the whole list here.

Now, I know it's a mix of computer and console games, but it didn't seem to fit in Everything But Gaming. Feel free to move if I'm wrong.

For those not interested in surfing the whole list here's the top 10:

(10) Super Metroid
(9)Star Wars TIE Fighter
[8] Street Fighter 2
(7) Star Craft
(6) Sid Meier's Pirates (1987)
(5) Super Mario 64
(4) Civilization 2
(3) Tetris
(2) Ledgend of Zelda: Ocarnia of Time
(1) Super Mario Brothers

I'm a bit surprised that there's so many console games it the top 10. I also thought the original Half Life (#22) would place in the top 10 as well.

Regardless....let the geek arguments begin. Try to keep your discourse limited to less than 5 paragraphs per game.

Thanks in advance.

Most of the console element list is good. The PC/computer element is near-awful. The top rated Ultima is U7 at #84? Below BF42 and RTW? Remove thine pate from out thy derriere. Pirates! (that should be '87 version, btw, Smoove) was a good game, but I would never place it above XCom, the Gold Box series (none of which made the list!) or frankly any number of other computer-based titles. MOO at #90? No thank you.

I grant that those are all good games, but I don't see X-Com in the top 10. And Super Mario Brothers, while pretty damn cool, just doesn't seem like #1 material.

Also, Street Fighter 2? Whatever...

Edit: After examining list, X-Com is 12, so that's alright... Really though, no reason to get pissed about it, these kind of lists are just the compiled opinion of a small group of people, no different than our contests here.
I'm special!

Wow. Only three adventure games on the list and they're all from Lucasarts? I mean, their games are good, but really...

And why's Mafia all the way down at 96?

Street Fighter 2 had to make the tip 10 list there were like 15 of them together they had to make a decent game , well maybe not had but you get the point. Its a law of probabilaty the more there are the more likely you have someone who likes it. And Where is Nibbles or Gorilas those were awsome games and no one apreciates them. Oh well back to my 386 running dos 5.1

Ocarina in the top 10 is almost as laughable as X-com not in the top 10.

Take out Super Mario 64 and Sid Mier's Pirates and put X-Com and Gunstar Heroes and I'm happy with it.

Remove the Mario games and Zelda (which always looked to me like it was designed for 8 year olds) and substitute one of the earlier Ultimas, Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape. Oh, and the Street Fighter silliness (hello, meant to be played in an arcade) should be traded for Deus Ex.

If this is truly a cross-platform list of the 100 best games of all time, then arcade games should be included, too.

Then substitute it for Centipede, or that cool robot killing game where if you run off the screen it yells "CHICKEN FIGHT LIKE A ROBOT". I killed an entire summer at the cottage playing that at the local canteen.

Street Fighter II belongs on that list. Top 10 definitely. It's Street Fighter. It's the Starcraft of all Fighting Games.

Centipede was way more fun. So was Tempest.

The list isn't about what was fun. It's about what was best ;).

Didn't realize those games were multiplayer

Oh, and I really doubt the ever-objective 'fun' criteria is the only merit at being in a top 100 list. Street Fighter 2 did more to further the 1 on 1 fight game then any game prior, and arguably, since.

Why would I want them to be multiplayer? That's no big plus in my book.

Beat'em ups were never my thing, so that's irrelevant to me. My list wouldn't include any console game from Nintendo or Sega - no Marios, Zeldas or Final Fantasies. All yawners. It's all completely subjective, of course, just like the IGN list.

Ranking Mafia as Nr 96 while GTA III is NR 51 is reason enough for me to not put faith in this list.

And where the F/&K is Operation Flashpoint !

Definately agree that Zelda 2 and Super Metroid should not be that high on the list. X-Com should be in the top 10, if not the top 5.

Also, if they are including Arcade games, where the heck is Deadly Disks of Tron (Tron's Deadly Disks)? That game was freekin awsome for an aracde game...c'mon, it had a blacklight built in for Heaven's sake!
