In-game advertising: they are watching you, Neo

Post by The Preacher »

Someone sent me this interesting article about how in-game advertising is working in SWAT4. What makes it so interesting is the level of complexity exhibited by such a "young" medium. They monitor by gamer id the time you played, the maps you played, the time you spent looking at the advertising (and at what angle and size). It's pretty incredible.

Jesus, that's pretty rough. Publishers definitally seem to want to make games more like TV, with what are effectively commercials.

I would have been fine with this if it was in the game to begin with and could be switched off. But to patch it in to an existing game? Just wrong. There's also a good some player info being sent too.

I wonder about the legality of that when considering minor players.

Ads for Penis cream? Bad.

Guns? Good.

I think.
