Web hosting

Post by crumsteel »

I know there was a thread about this, but I cannot find it.

I am looking for suggestion on where to host my web site. Currently I am with http://www.hugehost.com. There is not a problem with hugehost and they have been great but I would like to shop around and see what else is out there. What are some experiences with web host people have and recommendations?

I just signed up with SurfSpeedy, as they had a special running through webhostingtalk.com. I took the advanced plan, which seemed pretty complete, I'll letcha know how it goes:

webhostingtalk.com is an excellent site. Before the end of the year you will be able to sign up with navigatorhosting.com where this site is hosted. There will even be a special just for OO members.

The configuration of payment processing and template customization is going on now. If I get lucky we could have it running in mid December.

Thanks for the link to http://webhostingtalk.com. there are so many threads I get lost where I am at. The area where you can fill out what you want and get a quote could be convenient.
I am confused on what some of the types of services are. Can someone let me know if I am correct here:
Shared Hosting - multiple sites on one server I assume. Reseller Hosting - not sure on this. Dedicated Hosting - you own server. Colocation - a dedicated line to your own server.

Reseller hosting is when you sell your own brand hosting, but on another hosts network/equipment. The reseller provides support to his users, and the host provides support to the reseller only.

There are also host that provide virtual dedicated. In that scenario the Host runs a special software on the server that creates virtual isolated enviroments to the user. Often on a cluster. It operates logically like dedicated but the actual hardware is shared.

How is this going, Rip? Is the OO special still in the works?

I have everything up at

http://www.navigatorhosting.com

We are just testing and debugging and working on template modification as well as decisions about package sizes rates etc. So while operational it isn't pretty

But I have a package for free set up fo OO members, I'll have to look up the detailed info tonight. Things are progressing slowly because my networking business is very busy, and I can't afford to hire any more help. So far the hosting is nothing but overhead, so I hope I can get her running soon.

OK, the free hosting for OO members is 100MB of space and 1GB of traffic. No domain is needed as I will assign a subdomain of one of mine if the user doesn't want one.

Non OO members will be able to get the same plan for $1 a month but will have to have a domain or register one.
