Best drivers for a new 6800GT?

Post by Freezer-TPF- »

I got an eVGA 6800GT this week and plan to install it this weekend. http://www.octopusoverlords.com/phpBB2/ ... light=6800
I browsed a few of the nvidia forums (guru3d, nvnews, etc), and now I am totally confused about which drivers should work best with the card. So many versions, tweaks, bugs, etc.

I am looking for the most stable drivers with good image quality and no major bugs. I'm not worried about a few hundred points in benchmarks or a few fps in games as long as everything looks good and runs smoothly. Right now, I am primarily interested in running Doom 3 (came with the card, good test app!), KOTOR, and probably Far Cry, along with Half Life 2 eventually after the Steam crush dies down (and possibly a sound stutter patch, seems like a widespread issue).

So which drivers are you running on your 6800GT? 61.77? 66.93? Also, should I install DX 9c first before the drivers, is that right? Any other install or gentle tweaking tips are appreciated. I'm finally upgrading from a rock solid ti4200 with DX 9b and the trusty 44.03 drivers.

I believe they reccomend you install DX9c FIRST, but I can't imagine it makes that big a deal eaither way. If you install DX9c last, it MAY overwrite your video drivers if it thinks it has better ones.

As far as the driver itself, I used the one out of the box for my 6800GT (PNY). I forget the number (not at that computer now) but it's been fast (11,000 in 3dmark03) and stable so you may just want to leave it alone unless you have a reason to switch (I know, it's hard not to tweak your new toy) :D .

Cool, thanks Kilo. If you get back to your PC, let me know which version driver you're using. 8)

I was using the 61.77's with no problem playing Doom 3 and a bunch of other games/apps. I recently switched to 66.93 when I couldn't get HL2 to work. It ended up being a corrupted file from Steam that was causing the problems but I haven't had any problems with HL2 & 66.93's. I'll fire up Doom 3 for a bit & will let you know if I have any problems. I'll be very surpised if there is since Doom 3 was there partner or such.

edit: using BFG 6800GT

Their latest Linux drivers kick ass, I used them on my 6800GT.

When I ran WinXP, I used the Forceware 66.81WHQL drivers...
