Looks like my speculation about signups starting this Thursday was off. New update on their site:
On Friday, October 15, the servers that handle both sign-ups and account creation will come down in preparation for Web-infrastructure updates. If you have a beta key that you have not yet activated, we strongly recommend you do so before Friday. You will be unable to create a closed beta account once we deactivate these services. As always, thank you for being patient with us while we work to bring you the best experience we can deliver.
So, maybe next week?

As they said on the official forum, Open Beta won't begin until AFTER they hold sign-ups for Open Beta. Kind of hard to start an open beta when no one is signed up for it.
They've been steadfast in claiming that this downtime is just for extended server maintenance.
If they really want to release the game as it is in November, then we should see the open beta by the end of the month.

Everything seems to be converging on both WoW and EQ2 hitting very close to each other, if not launching on the same day. EQ2 has tons of beta contests running, coincidentally enough, just through the end of October. Man what a battle that's going to be if they come out on the same day. I bet the gaming sites and magazines are going NUTS.

You think everyone downloading first-day updates on Nov 15 will break the internet?

Oy, yeah, November is going to be crazy enough, let alone if two huge MMOGs appear then as well.
As of now, EB and Gamestop have both of their releases set for Nov 15th.
