Eliminating unnecessary startup processes?

Hiya. Does anyone have a comprehensive list of what *really* needs to be running at startup on Windows 2000? Looking over my processes, I have a ton of crap that's running that probably doesn't need to be and I'd like to eliminate what I can. This has especially become problematic because Symantec is having "scan omissions" on dozens of files, mostly .log and .dat stuff, but I'm sure that having unnecessary processes running isn't helping. I've uninstalled and re-installed the virus defs for Symantec, assuming the defs were corrupt and that was causing the scan omissions, but still having the problem.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

[/edit - link deleted - Win2k, not XP, sorry]

For a list of what every startup item does, reference this list.

In general only systray and explorer needs to be on for older machines. Everything else is fair game. :D

That's valid for a Win9x machine, but Win2k is NT-based and has a fair amount of things needed to function decently.

If you're concerned about your Windows 'Services' as well, Black Viper is a well known source for the information.
