64bit version of XP for AMD 64bit processor?

Only article I found was this and it shows the 64 bit version of XP seriously lacking in gaming. This was a beta/alpha review, so I'm not sure if things have changed.

Should I bother purchasing a 64bit version of XP for my new rig?

The 64 bit version of XP is still in beta. It is worth getting but you'll need to find drivers for your hardware. nVidia's drivers are pretty good. Still not good enough to have it as your main OS, though.
