Why Does Adobe Acrobat Reader Still Suck?

This still takes an insane amount of time to load and crashes more than not when you try and load a page within an internet browser (well, it sure seems like its more than not  ).

I've come to the stage where I just download pdf's to the desktop rather than risk it interfacing with Firefox\IE.

It's actually gotten worse over the years. Earlier versions of Adobe ran fairly smoothly, but the new ones are bloated and unstable. It's also always checking for updates, even when I tell it not to. That will sometimes crash it out and take the browser with it.

Viewing PDFs in the web browser is absurd anyway. You don't get the full Acrobat Reader interface, the PDF is usually zoomed to an awkward magnification and it slows the browser to a crawl. PDFs are wonderful, wonderful things, but they are only usable if downloaded and manipulated locally.

The best way to speed up Adobe Reader 6 is to go into its folder and empty out the Plug Ins directory (create an Inactive Plug Ins folder to be safe and move stuff there). It won't fly but it'll run instead of crawling.
