[Argh!] I've been f***ed by Norton!

Post by Kasey Chang »

Got Systemworks installed, just activated NAV (antivirus).

For past 48 hours I've been battling a very strange phenomemon... I boot the computer. It boots into Windows Explorer fine. The resources are in the 90's. All the programs load up. Resources drops to 70's, but that's normal.

Then the HD keeps spinning, and the resources keeps dropping, even though I didn't do anything. Within 60-90 seconds, the resources drops to 25%, 15%, 10%, 5%... and finally... 1%, before the whole system froze. I had only time ot wave the mouse around a bit.

At first I thought it was the video card, so I reinstalled the drivers, but that didn't help. Only deactivating anything related to Norton have stopped the hemorrage and allowed me to use the PC for any period of time.

I think I was still using NAV2001. You think it's time to upgrade? Or switch over to MacAfee?

Can you try to disable it before this happens, and then run LiveUpdate?

Or....try to change the settings for it. Maybe it's performing a scan automatically, or something similar.

Try to disable it, and then update it using the latest NAV definitions or LiveUpdate.

By the thread title, I thought you meant Ed Norton.

I've always had troubles with Systemworks. I like Norton's antivirus program but the rest of it has always crippled my system.

Can't help it. Just UNinstalled NAV completely.

Whenever I tried to print something it also triggers somehow, and I lost enough resources to cause another freeze. Liveupdate didn't help at all. In fact, it NEVER used to do this until LiveUpdate about a week ago or so.

It even screwed up my boot. Usually my bootup from Logo to GUI takes less than a minute. There was a LONG wait now so that total is 2-3 minutes. After the uninstall of NAV the boot went to 45 seconds. Heh?

On the other hand, I was just in CompUSA... and the temptation of FREE AFTER REBATE deal was too good to pass up... He-he-he.
