Can Windows XP ruin all my color printing?

First I lost the "reds" with my Canon s750 printer. I tried everything to get them back - but couldn't.
So I bought a new Canon iP3000. It seemed cheaper than trying to repair my 2-year old s750. I bought a new USB cable for it, too.
I uninstalled the old printer, and its drivers before installing the new printer.
Now I have the exact same problem with the new printer - NO RED.
What's going on? I can only surmise that the problem is actually with Windows XP. If it is, then how can I determine it, or fix it without a complete re-install?
