Media player problems

For some reason, about every third video file I try to launch (any format) will drop my system to its knees. The media player will immediately jump up to 100% CPU, the mouse will drop to moving once every ten seconds, and everything else on the system will freeze until the media player is closed.

It does this with both Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic. Once it has happened, it will happen with every video file until I have rebooted. I will then have three or four more launches before it happens again. I watch a lot of gameplay videos, so this is a real pain. Any ideas?

There is a patch available that Microsoft claims will fix CPU utilization jumping to 100%.
After applying the hotfix referenced in KB article 828026, some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.
And the link.

I don't know if it would apply or if you've already installed this but it may help.

I installed it just now, but it didn't fix the problem. I did find out that the problem also occurs with BSPlayer.

I always assumed this was some kind of cache problem.

I had the SAME exact thing happen to me. I eventually decided to just uninstall WMP and gave up. Until I realized that game intro movies were also locking / crashing my computer.

I tried everything known to man - including that stupid useless patch. It had me confounded for MONTHS. DirectX, Codecs, ATI drivers, everything.

Right before I made the Final Cut (TM), I decided to try and update the BIOS for my motherboard.

The problem ended. Go figure.
