PC Game of the Year

Post by The Mad Hatter »

These are all the entries I'm allowed to put in without going over the polling limit. Apologies for those I've missed - that's what the "Other" category is for.

FarCry.
I rate it higher than HL2 primarily because of HL2's strict linear path, a pet peeve of mine since the days of SOF. I hate when games make me feel like I'm on rails. Not that HL2 is a bad game or anything. I'm nearly finished and I'm loving it. I'm just saying I loved FarCry even more for its freedom.

I don't know if I played any 2004 games, so I didn't vote. For most of the year I played the Conquests expansion to Civ3, and the Rise and Rule mod.

I had both this game and Vampire in there originally, but there's only so many poll options allowed.

WoW for me, it is the first game in over a year that makes me want to click on something other than my Internet browser. It is also the first MMO I've played where it seemed I could jump in and start to have fun right away and so far seems perfect for people like me who can not devote hour upon hour to a MMO.

But, I also haven't installed my copy of HL yet :) .

RTW was the only one of the listed games that I played this year (not counting a few minutes of Kohan 2 at E3).

I love Kohan 2 and HL2, but I realize that I'm only playing these games when I take a break from WoW, so WoW it is.

I only included Kohan II as a kind of surrogate for all those RTS games that came and went pretty quickly (Warhammer, etc). Probably should have put UT2K4 instead. 2004 was heavy on the shooters and the MMOGs, light on other genres. I couldn't think of a single CRPG that even came out, much less was game of the year material.

my GOTY is Unreal Tournament 2004...but that's not on the list, so my vote went to HL2

WoW is the only game on that list that I purchased this year.

I suspect it will be my game of 2005, as well.

Only thing I don't like about most "pc game of the year" lists is that the newer games tend to win the spots because the sweetness of it is still fresh in everyone's memory.

I tried to correct for that but I really couldn't think of any major titles from earlier in the year, other than UT2K4. Did I miss a big one?

Pirates! is the only game on the list I have played. It was probably the game of the year for 1987, too.

I can't really vote for a game of the year - I can only vote for a "Games of the Ones I've Played".

Children of the Nile captured my heart and has held it against all comers, even the mighty Pirates!

I can't vote. I really can't.

I've bought few games this year, and they've all been amazing. Pirates!, World of WarCraft, Half Life 2, and Rome: Total War would all be tied for that spot.

Far Cry is the only game I bought that doesn't get on the list. It was a great game, don't get me wrong, but it just didn't hook me like the others did. It felt bland at times.
If I had a sig, would you read it?

After 85 votes it's pretty clear Half Life 2 is the OO game of the year for 2004. I own it but have yet to play it - too busy with WoW.

Is WoW THAT good? I was practically trembling when I installed HL2. I can't imagine anyone buying it to just set it on the shelf.

I have to at least give a nod to FarCry. This game seem to usher in the "new generation" of FPS's. I was blown away by the graphics and more "open" gameplay. And the physics! I remember wowing my friends as I shot cans, radios, fish and birds. Pushed barrels and crates down stairs and watched in amazement as things floated differently in the water based on mass. Oh, and don't forget the draw distances and the stable framerates in the thickest of jungles. Simply amazing. Of course, Halflife 2 has outdone this, but FarCry was way the first to really throw the whole package down on the table. Hear we are, many months down the road, and FarCry can still hold it's own with the new badboys.

Well, I got the Silver Steam subscription, and played through the original Half Life and Opposing Force expansion first. Once I was done with those I needed a break from the Half Life universe - which is when I bought WoW. I have yet to look back.
