2004 Independent Games of the Year

Post by Tareeq »

Not the "official" awards, but some website's take.

Some of these, particularly Smugglers 3 and Anito (an adventure game!) bear further investigation at least for me.

Some truly good gaming there, including Anito. Almost all i've played and recommend everyone try out.

Just tried Break Quest. There was too much stuff flying around on the screen so I had a hard time with it. Nice little game, but I won't be registering it.
For motivation and so Jeff V can make me look bad:
2010 Totals: Biking: 65 miles Running: 393 miles
2009 Finals: Biking: 93 miles Running: 158 miles (I know it sucked, but I had a hernia most of the year)

Just played Smuggler 3 for about an hour. Fun little game. It's a lot like the space trading game I played on my Palm, but a little more advanced. Buy stuff at one planet, sell it another, but the game makes it very easy to see what the prices are for each good on other planets. You can take missions which usually mean flying to different planets and getting in fights. Combat is easy, select the range you want to be at (short, medium, or long) and if you have a faster ship you will control the range. Then you have action points to fire guns, missiles, or use ECMs. Do enough damage to blow away their shields and you win. I was winning combats with my upgraded gun and engine easily, until I tried a bigger ship. He just kept me at long range and pounded me with lasers.

The demo limits you to one system of about 8 planets and you can't buy ships. I wish the demo was a bit more expansive so I could get more of a feel of the game once you have jump engines and leave the starting system.

I also just played Smuggler 3 for a bit, as I love sci-fi trading games and what not. I liked it, but I think Escape Velocity: Nova is a lot more fun.

Anito looks very interesting. Unfortunately, the developer's site seems to be down right now.

Definitely interesting stuff. Anito and Gish! are going to get some play time for sure.
If I had a sig, would you read it?

Wow, some of those games look great. Thanks for the link.

I've just recently decided to get into the indie/shareware scene; can anybody recommend a good website or two that has all the latest news etc?

Edit: Never mind, I found some. Cool! This is the type of game I could really do with right now.

Anito does look interesting (lthough it looks more like an RPG than an adventure game).

I was already interested in Smugglers 3 after purchasing two other games by the same developer (TV Manager and Starship Tycoon) and playing the demo, but I haven't gotten around to buying it.

Other independent games I've been enjoying include President Forever, and BeTrapped (or does the fact that it was designed by Jane Jensen preclude it from being "independent"?)

Anito is an RPG /Adventure game. It's very good with superior but very different music background.

The setting is in Phillipenes around 500 years ago. Wierd weapons and wierd armor. I nice change of pace form the typical medieval setting.

There is a demo somewhere. I tried it and it got me to buy the game.

Gish is a blast, by the way. For a side scroller, it's a lot of fun. Rolling around as a ball of tar with the ability to be slippery, heavy, or sticky doesn't sound like much, but it makes for some interesting gameplay. The physics are pretty impressive, too.

When it comes to indie games, Gametunnel isn't just "some website." ;)
