You'll save big money at Menard's!!! (PC, GC, PS2, XBox)

He said it, not me!

I was in Menard's tonight (looking for a microwave, imagine that  ), when I spied PC games - a bigger rack than the nearby Gamestop has now.

A good bunch of them were the usual shovelware, but they had a good selection of non-mainstream titles. I remember seeing:

~Echelon: Wind Warriors
~Europa 1400: The Guild (Gold version w/expansion included)
~Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood
~Microsoft Money 2003
~One Must Fall: Battlegrounds
~Platoon
~GI Combat
~A bunch I don't remember

Plus a ton of children's software. I'm sure that the selection varies from store to store. All of the PC software was $5.99.

They also had a big selection of Gamecube, XBox, and PS2 games for $14.99 each.

Also, through the 8th, they are passing out coupons at the door for 11% off any purchase (total bill, not just a single item).
What doesn't kill me makes me stranger.

Never heard of the place...and why is Phil Donahue working there under the name of Ray?

It's kind of a midwest thing. I don't know if they have any here in Illinois, but I've seen a lot of them in Iowa in South Dakota.

Basically Home Depot, with a few extra things.
If I had a sig, would you read it?

They're in Illinois. Menard's and Lowe's are the two big hardware stores in Peoria. Never would've thought to find video games there, though.

Yeah, they're great to buy from as long as you don't have to drive into the yard to pick up something large like lumber or a toilet. In that case, be prepared to spend all after-damn-noon waiting for someone to help you.

Hell, I once spent nearly an hour in the showroom just trying to find one damn dowel. Finally found someone who helped, and they didn't have my size.

So, here's my Menard's Heavy Discount Story:

My roommate from college, let's just call him . . . Brian . . . he grew up with this guy Paul. Paul's father drives freight trains across the country but when he's not busily doing that, he has a farm he lives on/works. Menards, aside from their video-game deals, stocks items such as fertilizer, 2x4's, etc.

Well, one day Paul and his dad go into Menard's and load up one of those hand-held flat-bed things with all manner of goods. I'm talking like a good eighteen inches of stuff just piled high on there.

On top of that he stacks giant, twenty-pound bags of fertilizer. Paul told me he could barely push the flat-bed by himself.

His dad tells him, "you push right up to the counter and then right out the door -- I'll take care of the rest" and Paul, figuring his Dad was about to be made to look like an arse, agrees.

So, Paul's pushing and his Dad -- apparantly there was a seperate cashier in the back, by the fertilizer, or something -- waves off the cashier of the aisle they're going through with a beat up, tattered receipt from some previous visit, jabs a thumb at the back of the store, and keeps on walking.

Boom -- right out the door.

"Dad, that's ridiculous," Paul says.

"Oh, I don't know," his father replies. "That receipt's been working the last two years."

And that is my Menard's Heavy Discount Story.

2/03 Update: all stock on sale @ $3.99

Was in getting some Sundry House Effects (tm) & per my Menards at least, I noticed all pc games in stock on sale at $3.99. Shelf sticker ways 'till 2/06 (Sunday).

I picked up a couple things: Europa 1400 Gold & MS Encarta 2004 (dvd). Worth a look-see/browse if you're in a Menards anyway.
