I had no less than 20 icons in there! There's one for mouse, Pop-up blocker, TransText, Packet UDF writer, DriveSpeed, ViewFix, Scanner Applet, PopFile, Firewall, and more!

So I was able to locate a copy of TrayManager2 somewhere on the net (the legal way to get it is to pay PCMag.com $5.95) and now my tray is CLEAN, with ONLY the stuff I want to show in there! (8 items now, including TrayManager itself)

Highly recommended.

You can also try using msconfig. In XP go to start, run, type msconfig. It allows you to choose what programs to start at startup. Doesn't do anything about hiding trac icons, though.

What exactly is the benefit of removing those little icons? Do they slow anything down? I just ask because I just built this system 4 weeks ago and I've already got 10 of those things in my tray. They aren't bothering me really, but if they're slowing the system down somehow, I'd want to get rid of some of them for sure.

The main benefit is get get more real estate on my taskbar so I can see my apps.

Every program that loads will slow the machine down a little by using up more memory and so on. However, all of the programs that I load in my tray now I actually need, like firewall, drivespeed, InCD, and so on.

In other words he doesn't want to actually remove the startups, he's just organized the Systray icons themselves.
