Cannot download attachments in MSN/Hotmail?

Post by MHS »

Hi all, I hope someone can help. In the past 2-4 weeks clients have not been able to open/save any of the attachments that they have received in msn hotmail. This has never happened before. The accounts are not new and we haven't changed any security settings. The message they receive is as follows:
"Internet Explorer cannot download from 64.4.61.250." or
"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later"

The message is always the same, even on attachments that they have successfully opened before. As I understand it, one of MSN's sites is 64.4.8.250., which is very close to the failed site address. MSN has recently increased attachment size for its users and created new domains for foreign use uk, fr, etc. Possibly this might be causing the problem.

MSN gave two suggestions and neither one worked. Pop-up blocker and file extensions. The attachments were all .doc. Sorry for the extensive explanation. I am trying to give all the facts. If anyone has any idea as to solving this problem, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Edited to add... usually if I log in under administrator, the client can then download the attachment, but not always.

I would try it with an altered extension on the attachment to see if that has an affect. There could be an IE "fix" that alters downloadable file types. Also make sure the sites are on the trusted sites list in internet properties.

Nothing worked. I have gone through step by step and checked the settings of the PC's that don't download against the ones that do. The only thing I could find different between them is if you go Tools->Internet Options->Programs (Running Win2K, btw), the ones that will let me download has nothing for the "HTML Editor" and "E-Mail" options, while the ones that don't work have things there (Microsoft Word for Windows, Notepad, etc). But I can't get rid of the things that are there, I can only change them. Restoring to default doesn't get rid of them either. And I'm not even positive that that's what's causing it. It's starting to really irritate me. My plan is to mess with it all day today until I find a solution.

And Valael, I would love to tell all my clients with this problem to get a better e-mail service, but that wouldn't help them get the attachments they need from the service they already have.

Bumping, as I still haven't found a solution to this. I'm surprised no one else has had this issue (except I'll assume no one here would ever use hotmail :P ), but surely some clients must? I'm finding more and more reports on tech boards about this, but no one has a solution.

Are they accessing hotmail using IE, or are they using Outlook Express? If they aren't using Outlook Express, you can set that up to use their hotmail account and try that.

You have to be a paying member of hotmail to use that feature now.

What setting do the ones that have it have in the e-mail field? I have hotmail as an option. Do they? It may help to download and install the latest msn messenger.

I would also run Hijack This on a system from each group and compare. Just to be thorough.
