NWN: Any Kingmaker or Shadowguard impressions?
From the Bioware store, just to tweak your recall.
I had expected to find some feedback on these user-pay donwnloads and was surprised not to.
So, from those that have played them, was it worth the marginal fee or is the fan-base provided modules providing so much better value that the 'professional' mods are not worth it?
edit = stressing NWN in the title.

You're right, PC version of Kingmaker was released before.Biyobi wrote:I seem to recall having a PC version of Kingmaker quite a long time ago. True. I had it, but it was by Avalon Hill's computer games division, before there was any whiff of Microprose associated with it. It was no good.Victoria Raverna wrote:You're right, PC version of Kingmaker was released before.Biyobi wrote:I seem to recall having a PC version of Kingmaker quite a long time ago. But a modern version made by someone who understands strategy would rock.
Over here.

Not to derail this thread
, but I bought both NWN modules. They are short, but worth the small fee. They are better than most user made modules (and should be!). The free Witch's Wake was fun too, but I liked the other two more.
Kingmaker seemed more replayable, there's a sort of time limit so I don't even know if it's possible to do everything in one run through, I didn't come close. The quests were fun and the fights not too difficult for my Wizard. A lot of the user made modules are very unfriendly to low level Wizards. I really enjoyed the henchman in this one. They seemed like more then tag alongs.
Shadowguard was a lot of fun and hopefully will get the sequel that seemed to be implied. Again I was able to play with a Wizard without much trouble. Henchman were more temporary and didn't seem as fleshed out as Kingmaker. A lot of that might have been that they were with you less and didn't reveal a whole lot about themselves.
Overall well worth $14. I'm looking forward to more modules and I really hope this Digital Distribution thing works out, the quality user made modules seem to be dying off.

I should add that there are a few fan made mods that match or even surpass the Bioware ones, but I still felt that it was worth $14. Especially given the lack of recent good releases from fans.
All of this is of course my opinion.

My favorite modules by far are the ones by Adam Miller: Shadowlords, Dreamcatcher, and Demon. I've played all of them a couple of times. The Dreamcatcher series though is where it really takes off. I'd recommend starting with Shadowlords though, that way you can take the same character all the way through.Quaro wrote:I just installed NWN -- mind recommending a few of those modules that surpass the Bioware ones? I haven't been able to get into the built-in campaign at all, it's so dry.
I really liked the interaction with your henchman in his modules. The combat was well done, just enough to keep things interesting. There are some really incredible things done in the Dreamcatcher series, including ship battles, flying a dragon, and commanding an army.
The first two parts of Rick Burton's Paladin Triology are great. The interaction with your partner is even better than in Adam Miller's series. If you don't mind playing a Paladin I'd highly recommend it. The biggest flaw (IMHO) is the heavy use of puzzles, some are great, others just seem tedious. It's also pretty heavy on combat which I don't usually like, but didn't mind in this case.
You might want to wait and see if he ever releases the final module. It seems to fluctuate as to whether or not he's going to finish. Last I read it's back on though.
I'd also second the notion of playing the expansions. They are better than the original campaign.
Beyond that check out the Hall of Fame modules at Neverwinter Vault linked up above. Download what seems good. Most of them are fun and you can pick the type you like.
