Ok, so I am at law school connected to the wireless internet. I have to be here FOREVER today and I want to play some online poker at my regular site. However, it refuses to log on and the support page says I am probably behind a firewall. So my network card does not have any firewall installed or it least the box is not checked. Could the schools wireless hub or network thingy or whatever have a buit in firewall, and IF SO, is there any way to force open some ports so i can access this poker site. no other website i have found has been blocked.
thanks

It is possible the school has its own firewall. It could be at any level, router, switch, wherever. No, you cannot open ports if they know a thing about configuring it. If you could open ports, there would be no point to having the firewall. If you need a port open, you have to talk to the IS admin. Port 80 is open since you can get some pages, so that's not your problem.
It is possible they're blocking certain sites, which would be why you can't get poker but can get elsewhere.
If you really need to play, call IS and tell them as long as it's not against policy or something. They'll probably welcome the honesty.
