DSL/Router/Bittorrent porblems oh my.

Post by Arnold Yim »

Finally got DSL a month ago, and everything works splendid.

Unlike my previous experience with SBC, Verizon DSL is actually pretty good. Haven't had any problems with it yet.

However, it always lags out after running any bittorrent for a period of time, usually 10 minutes, but sometimes after a couple of hours.

Is this because of some setting that I am missing (I did all the port forwarding stuff), or does Verizon pre-empt any suspected bittorrent activity by turning off the connection when it sees continuous upload/download traffic?

It is getting to be a real hassle that it takes me forever to download stupid WoW updates or shows like Lost that I missed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thx guys.

Which bittorrent client? It's probably not Verizon, I suspect the router is just freaking out. First thing I'd to is turn off UDP connections in the bittorrent client -- it's not uncommon for consumer level routers to choke on all that traffic.

If it's still killing your connection just try lowering the number of connections allowed until it sticks.

I'd try another client if you haven't already. I've used Azureus in the past and I'm using ABC now.

BT is P2P right? Could be that your uploads are slowing everything down. Sounds right, if it only starts happening after 10mins-a few hours.

Verizon couldn't block based solely on upload/download volume. They'd kill video chat, gaming, ftp, tons of legit uses.

I know I have problems with downloading Bit Torrents, it was one of the main reasons I decided not to play WOW. I think it has to do with my linksys Cable Modem. The only way I can get it to work reasonably well is to use a program like NetLimiter to limit my download spead to 50k or less. When it is like that, I usually don't have a problem with my internet locking up.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I was using Bitornado, but tried ABC today.

Been fiddling around with the controls to limit the number and size of uploads, as well as the downloads. . . doesn't seem to help, but it's too early to tell I guess.

Here's to hoping everything works out :-)

Make sure you have the latest firmware on any router/gateways you might use.

Thanks guys.

I finally got Bittorrent to work for more than 8 hours without dropping my connection :-)

I just had to limit my max uploads to 2 and my global upload rate to 20 kB/s through ABC.

Seems a little extreme for Verizon's new touted service of 3mb/768 or whatever DSL for $30/month, but I can live with it.

Thx again for the suggestions.
