Why can't I play KOTOR?

Post by Kraken »

Is there a workaround for my apparently insufficient vidgie card? What is GL status?

I found this online -- someone was having the same error message as you:
Had to update drivers to Open GL etc. Try here:

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
I would think that's what the "GL Status" means -- something to do with Open GL. What I don't know is if your card supports the type of Open GL update that KotOR requires.

Hmmm...it seems to want 1.1 or higher, and your readout indicates you have that installed.

Maybe your video driver install is pooched?
Maybe next year, maybe no go

Ironrod, according to the Troubleshooting doc on my installed copy of KOTOR, the "ATI Radeon 7000/7200/7500" family of chipsets are not supported. You can try the latest ATI Catalyst or Omega third party drivers, but I doubt it will work.

The 7500 isn't a DX8 card. Need at least a 8500 or better. You can get a pretty good deal on a Radeon 9600XT nowadays.

You can get a 5200 refurb from newegg for just under $50. It isn't the fastest card in the world but it supports DX 9 and OGL 1.4. Not the fastest card in the world and it may not come with all the cables but it's cheap and it will run any game out today (albeit not at high rez or super fast).

For $70 you can get a Radeon 9550 which is a nice step up from the 5200.

Thanks, that's about what I figured. I'll wait until I can get a good card. A 6600GT just went to the top of my wishlist.

I was able to play KOTOR with an ATI Radeon 32MB AIW, which is a Radeon 7000 or 7200 IIRC.

I think I'm using the Catalyst drivers.

"Not supported" != "won't work". The Catalyst driver did the trick. Thanks, Nade.
