Grey boxes appearing in windows

Post by martindemon »

Can we put back the sticky about how to desactivate the grey boxes that some lame spammers use to advertise their products to everyone?

(edit)
I have the french version of Windows XP; perhaps we could put the two paths (english and french) that lead to the disabling of this option. I think it was on configuration panel, administration tools?, services?, ?

Rt-click on My computer and select Manage... (this opens up computer management, also available in Administrative tools from the control panel)
In computer management open Services and Applications
Open Services
Find the "Messenger" service, 2x click on it, and disable it.

Installing Service Pack 2 will also disable the service by default. Why they don't remove the useless thing entirely I'll never know...

Because the messenger service which causes these popups has been used by various programs for years.

ok, I have SP2 so my problem is not from that... I installed adaware, spybot and spy sweeper and I still get those boxes. Time to reformat soon.
