So my dad wants a laptop. He checks his e-mail twice a week and uses a word processing program even less. He doesn't need anything uber-powerful. Something decent that will last for a few years without a lot of tech support is the best way to go I think. I'd say strong enough to run any basic programs that will come out over the next few years.
My general ideas for a system goes like this:
2.something processor
512 megs of ram
DVD-rom (He doesn't need a burner, but if a cd-r/rw comes with it, that's fine and if a dvd-r/rw isn't that much more expensive I'm sure he'd go for that)
Wireless internet capabilities (and any peripherals such as the wireless router and stuff, recommendations would be good)
XP Home
An extra usb port or two for a digital camera plug-in (would a printer go into a usb drive on a laptop or would a regular cable work?)
I have no clue when it comes to laptops, so any warnings or advice would be good.
Another laptop question

while not a horrible thing i would avoid compaq as they have given me trouble in the past, tech support was fine but it the same problem occured and i had to ship it back for repairs 4 times. they eventualy replaced it but they never understood what was wrong even though i told them what it was every time i sent it in. HP is prety good, toshiba is my personal favorite though. just beware of bargan bin laptops as they often sound good but are cheaply made or have shared this or that that takes away from your resorces used by other programs.

Take a look ath the above thread. Lots of good info there. The emachines that Beer Goggles linked to would be a good choice. If you're going to be connecting a camera, I would suggest looking for something that has a card reader. You can hook your camera up with a usb cable but it is much more convenient to pop the card out of the camera and into the laptop.
