DVD software with surround support

Post by benvh »

I am currently running a Creative Audigy 2ZS soundcard with Creative 7.1 Dolby THX speakers. I currently have a copy of WinDVD but it does not support surround sound. I beleve you can purchase surround support for this program, but I was wondering if there was something better out there. What are you all using to play DVDs with surround?

I am an owner of a Audigy 2 platinum ex and was never able to listen to movies in dolby digital on my computer. I solved the problem and bought a dvd player. I think that the coaxial output is split up for their (Creative) speakers. They kind of separated the front from the rear. The tests I made always gave me problems so I tried optical but only got the front left right; no rears or center or sub woofer. I was angry, then I remember that this is not a professional card, at most, it's a good cheap amateur card for games, that's all. Semi pro and pro cards are 500$ and more. DVD players are very cheap, so I opted for the simple solution, and the sound from the DVD player (table player) is much better than the sound output by the audigy 2. In fact, the sound of the audigy 2 is poor by audiophile standard.

PowerDVD should do exactly what you need, as well as quite a bit more. i've been using it for years and it just keeps getting better. you can check it out on the official website...they even have a demo so that you can try it out before you buy.

i use PowerDVD with a set of speakers that have a built-in Dolby Digital decoder, and it passes the raw DD signal directly through the digital coaxial SPDIF output on the soundcard to my speakers. i've also had tried it with a standard 4-speaker setup using the multiple outputs on the Audigy2-ZS and it works great 8)
