I had this game back in the day, and when I reacquired a SNES on eBay, this game was included.
I tried playing it this weekend, but something about it ain't happening for me. I don't remember it being a bad game, I would have rated it at 6 or 7 out of ten, but I couldn't handle it for more then ~1 hour when I tried to pick it up Saturday.
Did it have a horrible start? I don't remember...
Perhaps I just want to make an excuse to get to Final Fantasy 3?
I remember that I actually played and finished this game and indeed didn't like it as much as Secret of Mana, but apart from that I remember absolutely NOTHING about the game.
Yeah, Secret of Evermore was a repetitive version of SoM where there a bunch of sci-fi references, but the thing was that SoM was tight, the combat was good, and it kind of made sense in that weird Square way. SoE was, instead, an American-made version that loosened the controls and just plain wasn't as fun. It was just missing that weird intangible that makes games great.

Man, Secret of Mana was a great game. There was a sequel to it that never got released in the US that was pretty good.
FF3 is still (and probably always will be) the best of the series, IMO. I remember paying like $70 for it the first time it came out, but it sure was worth it.
I don't know, I'm a huge fan of FF2 (3 ruled as well). I still have the original cartridge, box, and manual of FF2. Something about that game just kicked ass. I think it was the summons .
Secret of Mana was also a favorite of mine. I think I cast the Lightning Spell 100's of times while I was playing it through.
What did yall think of Illusian of Gaia? I thought it was a pretty fun game, but the story got pretty cheesy by the end. Something about characters who look like 8 year old falling in love just didn't seem right.
To my Wife:
"Life's only life with you in this song" -Whistles the Wind, Flogging Molly
Not to my Wife:
- "When someone smiles at me, all I see is a chimpanzee begging for his life."
Illusion of Gaia was okay, but it's follow-up, Terranigma, which was never released in the US, was absolutely INCREDIBLE. If you can hunt it down through one way or another, play it. What a great game.
