Quick advice on LCD (Hyundai L90D+ vs Viewsonic 912b)

Post by gorham09 »

I have a Viewsonic 912b Viewsonic 912bon order with Dell. However, I found this Hyundai L90D+ which uses a Samsung panel and has an 8ms response time- BUT apparently it is a 6bit panel. On the other hand it is $170 less than the Viewsonic, which I can 't confirm one way or the other as being an 8bit versus 6bit panel.

I am not the google master, so I am looking for some quick advice on whether the Hyundai would be an overall better buy, given the specs and reviews. I have read that the Hyundai has some issues with viewing angles and the potential color issues with it being a 6 bit panel. However, I have also read that the Viewsonic is a 6 bit panel (or at least is something called a 6+2 bit panel).

Can anyone with more knowledge of LCD's share their thoughts on these and which might be the better buy in the long run?

I am trying to make a quick decision as the Hyundai is at a very good price point and I am afraid it will be sold out if I don't move quickly.

Thanks!

I looked at this post and didn't know enough about the panels you were considering to offer any decent advice. I did learn a bit from the article you linked thanks! Otherwise I just fled the thread as it were once I realized I would be of no assistance to you. Now though hopefully the two of us who can't help you with your problem whatsoever can at least help you lose the pariah feeling. ;)

Ha ha, you guys posted in the pariah's thread...

Gorham, I don't have any exprience with either of those monitors. From what I've heard though they're both great. The L90D+, if it is indeed the 90+ and not the regular 90 (see your bargain bin thread), has solid reviews and is a nice looking monitor. Its response time is the real selling point.

Viewsonic has a solid rep, with me at least, and puts out good products. I'm still perfectly happy with my CRT monitors but when I go looking for an LCD I'll probably start with Viewsonic.

Wohoo, I feel good about myself again! Someone responded (typed with tongue firmly planted in cheek, as was the pariah comment).

Actually, the color issue isn't really corner cutting, but rather technological limitations. My research leads me to believe that 8 bit panels with sub 16ms response times simply don't exist right now. From what I have read, most people aren't bothered by the dithering at all. And since I now believe that the Viewsonic 912b is some variation of a 6 bit panel (perhaps 6+2- not sure exactly what that means) and has been getting great reviews, I am not as concerned about it in the Hyundai as I was before.
