After watching this trailer I am now very psyched for this game (hat tip to Tom Chick's Fidgit). I wish it was set a bit earlier in terms of timeline (early 1900s is awfully late for a Western game), but it sure looks like fun.

I do not own a console and I do not plan on getting one either in the near future but this game looks awesome.

I am hoping it will find its way to the PC of course, but even if it does not I will read the reviews on this title, it has potential to become a classic game in the western genre. I read that the gaming world will be about twize the size of the one in GTA: San Andreas.

Ive been waiting for this and mafia 2 for a few years now, thankfully the wait is almost over...

Based on the trailer, Red Dead Redemption looks like a cross between GTA and Gun, which I really enjoyed on the Gamecube (this is probably the first time anyone's mentioned that console on OO in years).

I'm praying that this can live up to my expectations. I love love love the western setting but nobody seems to have gotten it right since Lucas Arts a billion years ago.

Using some Amazon credits, I had to pre-order. Every video I see and preview that I read suggest that this game is going to be big fun.

Life in the West Pt. 2 from Game Trailers.

I'm hoping it's more like Bully and less like the Grand Theft Auto series (in terms of how they handle the story). To date, Bully is the only Rockstar game I've ever played to the end. I always get distracted and ultimately bored with games in the GTA series.

God I can't f'n wait for this game to come out!!! I think I have like 25 bucks in points already on my amazon cc so I'll probably snag it from there. GTA4 is the first game of the series that I actually finished. I even finished The Lost and The Damned as well. I'm just hoping they take a more serious tone with this one as wacky crap is going to stick out like a sore thumb in this setting. From the videos it looks like they did that but you never know...

I could see multiplayer being a lot of fun as well. I haven't really seen a list of what it have but there's tons of room for some cool modes if they devote some time to it.

I'm cautiously excited. However, I heard a lot of rumors about development troubles a few months back that got me worried that the game was not what it was hyped up to be. Hopefully they've straightened everything out, because this sounds like the PERFECT game for me.

Well they did push the game back a couple of times but I see that as a positive as that just means they are cleaning it up more. At least that's what I keep on telling myself because if this game flops we will never get a good Western game again.

Yeah, I am hoping for the same thing. I'm choosing to believe the delays are related to quality improvements. Hell, Arkham Asylum was delayed for ~5 months and look how awesome that worked out.

After watching the two game play trailers, I placed a pre-order with Amazon. I love me some spaghetti westerns!

Ill be all over this game day one. Well maybe not day one, Ill be on vacation with my girlfriend when it comes out, but as soon as I get back, its mine. They announced a multiplayer setting which is basically an open west area where 2 gangs of 8 people can shoot it out. Throw in the wild west rpg aspect of solo play and you have a game that has the best of both.

Yeah...that's pretty much ridiculous. Finally might get some good use out of my XBL Gold status. I still can't get over the rag-doll physics and/or hit detection. This game looks brutal.

Having the gun fights so crazy I hope it comes to PC. But if not I'll eventually get it on 360.. Glad I can say that now

Man that game looks awesome. I've stayed away from the GTA's due to the language and probably will have to stay away from this. Wish there was an option to censor that.

Ya well I don't see the language being any better then their other games. If that follow Deadwood it will be much worse actually.

Most of the info I can find says they don't have a local co-op version to play. Anyone know if that's correct?

I really want to play it, but I find playing co-op with my husband much more satisfying for games like this. Not sure I can justify the expense to myself if it's just going to be a 'me' game, especially when he's not interested in it on its own ground.

from what Ive read, the meat of the game is a solo rpg, there is no co-op aspect to it. Now the open world multi player portion has things the you can do in 2 player groups, if you choose to. Probably not the answer you were hoping for but still even without co-op play I think you could have some fun with it partnering up for mp play. It seems a lot of the open world content is suitable for small groups and even solo play if desired. You might want to put this one on your wait and see list, let some of us here get the game and let you know more about it post release.

There was an interesting article on Kotaku today about how this game isn't technically a Western. Why? Because it takes place in 1908. Technically, it's more like a post-apocalyptic Western.

The Civil War was long gone, so long gone in fact that the First World War – with its tanks, battleships and fighter planes - was less than a decade away. Indian conflicts had all but ceased, the native inhabitants of North America either wiped out or driven into reservations. The great westward expansion was a thing of the past because, well, by 1908 there was nowhere left to expand to.

It's not something I picked up on, but I think it's an interesting distinction.

Hmm.... as usual the media is assuming that New York City of 1908 is exactly how everywhere else in the country was as well.

Naturally the west lagged behind the East because it was so far removed by distance from the New Yorks and Chicagos. Hell, Alaska resembled a western frontier for decades beyond even when the 'Old West' gave it up.

I wish journalists would actually do some homework before they post stuff like that. Heck... maybe even just a google search?

Did you read the article? They interviewed several historians. For example:

Do you want to jump straight onto your horse from the second story of a building? Because that's in there, too.

I think the point of the article still stands. When I think of a "Western" themed game, I'm thinking something in the mid to late 1800s, not inching up on WWI. It doesn't change my level of anticipation, I'm just curious to see why they made that choice and what it will mean for the game.

I am almost positive they made the choice so they could include plot lines about our friends south of the border, and all the politics that came into play leading up to the mexican revolution.

That and plenty of trains to rob.

This reminds me of one day when we were sitting in our conference room talking about video games.

One guy says, "Man, what was that game where you kill all those Mechs? God that was fun running around, shooting Mechs, blowing stuff up!"

Our manager indignantly exclaims (in total seriousness), "What kind of game were you playing? YOU KILLED MEXICANS???"

FYI one of the multiplayer modes starts off with a Mexican standoff. I doubt the mp will have much legs but it should be fun for a week or so.

totally disagree, I think the MP will have giant legs, as successful or if even more so then say Uncharted 2. ( which just put out a MP expanison pack)

While in Gamestop today putting more money down on my copy the guy told me that all of us who pre ordered are being upgraded to the CE version for free. No idea what extra we get but thats cool. Also pre ordered Halo Reach.

They put a lot of focus on the MP for GTA4 and that died off after a couple of weeks. I really hope I'm wrong as I would love to play the game online for a long time.

It's not something I picked up on, but I think it's an interesting distinction.

I wouldn't buy the review and don't care for the reviewer based on the clip. It's that sort of talk that I was brought up on and it took until about half way through college to see history as more flowing and interconnected than as segmented separate collectible pieces. I think I'd have understood history better and appreciated it a lot more if we had allowed the Civil war and old west and WWI for instance to blend together and to give me a sense of short of a time fifty years is.

It took me a long time to start putting all of this stuff together. Kotaku doesn't get to rip it all apart on me so they can sound literate.

This will probably be the first modern I game I buy when it was still modern in I don't know when. I hope my machine can run it.
