Defiance
Nobody here playing?
Was considering it but I just can't get much in the way of reviews either from mainstream sites or people actually playing the game.
Seems like a bad sign to me.

Re: Defiance
As a huge MMO fan/player I looked into Defiance and also noticed a scarcity of reviews. For me the $60 price tag ultimately swayed me to not dive in, particularly as I am convinced the game will sell for 10 bucks at some point in the very near future. It's great that the new crop of MMO's like GW2, Defiance and Tera (yeah it took them a year to see the light) are dropping the monthly subscriptions but these days I still need a bit more assurance before dropping $60 on a game.

I've got it and only had time to play it a few hours. I really like it so far, but it does have this sort of Tabula Rasa vibe that may mean it doesn't last. I'm seeing tons of people online, so it surely is more popular than it seems.

There are many good vids for this. On YouTube look for Jackfrags stuff. Its based on the TV show on SYFY. they are supposed to be connected. like someone will be on the show and in game or if they leave the show they end up in game for a while then may return to the show.
Looks like a lower test RIFT style game to me.

Re: Defiance
I have it as has razgon and few other members that are split acroos OO/GT/QT3 and it sa great game so far.
First it's not fantasy, the classes are really just the weapons and there are loads of them just like Borderlands. It's 3rd person. The missions are much better, no kill this x 10 or collect this. So far i've put a Radio station back on air, disabled gun emplacement,t aken out a bunch of snipers sniping a mission zone.
There is a main mission through the game along with loads of side missions which include time trial races in your mounts which are cars, I have a Dodge Challenger as my Mount. There are alos killing trials where you have to kill as many mutants as possible. There are also normal side missions. The trials are redoable as many times as you like.
There are also rifts like in Rift except they are called Arkfalls which you need to close by killing all the stuff that comes through them, great fun as well.
So far i'm really enjoying it. As there is no sub fee i'm happy with the £28 a paid for it and can dip in and out when I feel like it.
Cant understand why there are no reviews out as it's in no way a bad game but it ma be it has just passed under the radar due to all the other games which has come out.

Re: Defiance
I don't think there are many reviews because it is an MMORPG and the reviewers need to get to the late-game content before they can (or should, that is) write. IMHO, it is stronger than Borderlands and offers a more casual and fun MMORPG format. You get a mount within hours of playing (which is just plain awesome). Everything is fast-paced and fun and the missions are, as stated, much better than your normal fare. You don't go out and grind XP from kills, as enemies are constantly around and don't really give much in the way of loot or XP (with some exceptions) - so the game is more mission-driven.
My copy also came with the expansion for Rift... so I am thinking of resubbing for it (wish it was F2P), because I very much enjoyed it.

There seems to be different grades of weapons the same as borderlands. Super rare, rare, uncomonnon etc. Also they have different extras like lightning damage or poison etc. Also you pick unp mods for your weapons to improve them etc. There is very little random grey loot which is cool.

Hmm... after reading over the forums I think I'm going to pass. The loot system isn't mature enough for me as I read a lot of comments about how getting to level 1000 basically allows you to buy stuff as good as anything you would get on a drop.
Sounds vanilla and unexciting. I'm a loot whore. I need games with great loot.

and about watching how the bodies hit the floor!!
There was a mutant standing in what at one time would have been a bus stop (those "buildings" by the sides of the street where ppl can sit/stand in them while waiting for the bus). He got a bus, alright...my 4-wheeler in his face. He died...slumped, sitting on the bus stop bench...
I love games with ragdoll physics

Re: Defiance
I got to play for a few hours last night and have to say I was largely underwhelmed. Was a little surprised this was a Trion title.
I found the game to be rather solo unfriendly, not a huge deal as it is an MMO and I am of the mind that MMO's were meant to be played in groups. It simply stood out in contrast to the highly soloable crop of MMO's coming out recently. I definitely did not like the way the game handled creature spawns. Step on a trigger point and mobs would literally spawn right on top of you. Add this to the fact that creatures move WAY faster than you do and it made for a less than appealing mechanic for me.
I liked the fact they gave you a "mount" fairly early on, unfortunately I hated trying to drive the damn thing and just ran from point to point most of the time. Sorry but using a mount in an MMO shouldn't take as much skill as that stupid trike required to drive. There were notations on the map for "Fast travel" points but I couldn't seem to get any to work, not sure if I was doing something wrong or maybe they were turned off for the free account but it made traveling around sort of a pain.
I also kept running in to artificial walls and having to do a lot of back tracking and even managed to get stuck in an area once or twice by not noticing a turn off in the road.
Combat has a very Borderlands feel to it and I liked that they placed ammo crates all around the world so ammo wasn't a huge issue. There were a wide variety of weapons to use even in the short time I got to play.
Again I only played for several hours but I can't say I really felt wow'ed by the skill matrix. Seems like only 4 active skills to choose from and the rest all appeared to be passive abilities.
There were tons of quests and challenges all around the map which was nice but I could have used a bit more direction in following the main story. Oddly you have to consciously ignore a lot of content to stay on track.
I did a couple of Ark Falls and they were pretty cool, very similar to Rift events in Rift (no big surprise). I did a side quest where I got to meet Nolan and Irissa which was a neat touch as well.
All in all based on a few hours of play I'd say the game is worth playing for free but a little to meh for the $60 admission fee. I'd pick it up on a half price sale, 33% was close but no cigar.

I soloed it for quite a while (maybe a dozen hours) and didn't have too much trouble with it. I died some, but I expect that. I died a lot less than playing zero in BL2.Tao wrote:I found the game to be rather solo unfriendly, not a huge deal as it is an MMO and I am of the mind that MMO's were meant to be played in groups. The only invisible walls I ever ran into were slopes too steep to be climbable. I also didn't have any issue with fast travel other than their not being enough of them. Also, the four wheeler hasn't been a problem for me to maneuver. I managed some good times in some of the time trials.
I don't know if any of the differences are based on what they were allowing for the free weekend as I bought it at release.

Re: Defiance
Heya
I played for 12 hours or so Saturday, taking advantage of the free weekend.
I am not much of an MMO player, so some comparisons are beyond me, and I was solo'ing for the entire time.
Definition of solo'ing allows for random groupings for Ark Falls, or other players doing the same mission at the same time, rather than just my character alone all the time.
I liked the mission area integration, where folks can drop in and out of the missions as they arrive or depart.
So rather than waiting for someone else to finish up the mission and for it to respawn, you can literally arrive just as the last objective is being completed and get completion without firing a shot.
Then later, if you want, you can drop by that same mission and play it from start to finish just to get the sense of having actually done it.
However I also grew to dislike the random spawning missions such as Hellbug Clearances, where they got in the way of the quest line I was following.
Clearing one such random I hopped up onto a tree trunk to get a sniper view of the quest location I was headed to, only to have the tree trunk dissipate under me as the random was purged from the map.
Then on my way back out of that same quest point I ended up in another random in that same point.
Turned to run back and found that the quest area had restarted behind me, so got slaughtered by the combo of both.
Outside of interference during quest lines, I do feel the Randoms are a good alternative to the standard fed ex / collection quests.
Plus they tend to come across as consistent to the world.
Had no issues beyond keyboard layout for the Trike.
Completed time trials readily once I figured out how to boost and stay on the track
I will agree that some parts of the game are Solo unfriendly.
However I found that with sufficient application of Shotgun ammo and dodging I could even take down a Hellbug Matriarch on my own, doing so at least three times during the course of my time in game.
I even managed to clear a Raider Arkfall once solo, courtesy of electrical semi-auto sniper rifle
Died twice doing it, and was surprised to find it still on Wave 3/3 when I got back after dying the second time.
( actually, more surprised to find no one else showed up, but there was a major arkfall far across the map, so having my own minor one was kinda cool )
It was during the questline missions that I noticed the lack of group support giving me grief.
Any area in which I am expected to enter a Bunker situation was notably better for having more people.
Still completed them solo, but hella frustrating in the process.

It's $39.99 on their own site. Is it worth paying that much for? Like is it fun enough? Buggy? Anything I should know?
Most of all if I pay that and buy it from them can I activate it on Steam and download it there? Because it's still $59.99 on Steam and Im not sure they would want to lose money and still let it be a Steam game. To be clear I want it on Steam but don't want to pay the Steam price when it's cheaper on the devs own page.

Re: Defiance
Looking at the Defiance entry on Steam, the page you linked, and the official list of keys redeemable on Steam, I don't think so.
It isn't for the reasons you list, though. Any Steam game with other retail options can be purchased elsewhere and redeemed on Steam. I've done it many times - purchased through Amazon, purchased through Green Man Gaming. I believe I pre-ordered Borderlands 2 for $40 on Green Man, then plugged the key into Steam that very day while Steam was still selling it for $60.
In fact, right this very moment, Skyrim is $29.99 on Steam, and $26.45 on Amazon. Skyrim is a Steam-only game, meaning that you put the key into Steam to play it.

Re: Defiance
Yeah, Defiance isn't a Steamworks game, you can just buy it through Steam. Anywhere else that you buy it gives you access to the installer, not a key.

Re: Defiance
They have pretty much fixed the stuff (minor stuff, I know, but still) that I had issues with.
1. There is now text of the names of certain places on the map
2. They now have listed on your inventory screen what loadout each weapon/shield is attached to
3. And, you can now reset a weapon's Mastery XP. That weapon does not even lose its Mastery Bonus, either, and you are then able to continue to gain weapon xp with it. The weapon I did that to cost me 4,000 resources (pocket change, really) and 20 minutes. But now that weapon is able to gain weapon xp again, without losing it's previous earned bonus
And, the seiges are great, very chaotic fun!!

Re: Defiance
Can we only have 1 character? I always have a lot of alts in these type games and I had 2 characters in mind. But logging out my character to make my 2nd I no longer see a creat character button. So just one?

Re: Defiance
Interwebs indicate you can have a total of 4 characters. I picked this up on the cheap for 13 bucks (Steam sale) and I was able to create 2 characters as was a buddy of mine (wanted to try two of the active skills). Not sure what sort of legs this will have for me overall, put in about 8 hours and my opinions from the free weekend a few months back still seem valid. Trion seems to be attempting to integrate some recently new mechanics (Rift, GW2) along with a new approach to handling loot. I get what they are trying to do and it seems like an interesting concept, I am just not sure if it's my cup of tea.Can we only have 1 character? Ok after you confirmed that for me I looked closer and spotted that little arrow to click and make a new guy. First time I've seen a creation menu made like this one.

Re: Defiance
The lockbox is a vendor that sells several different tiered, green, blue and purple, boxes which contain items of similar quality. So green box has green items, blue box blue items and so forth. You can purchase the boxes with real money by buying in game "Bits" for cash or using "Keys" which you get for completing an Arkfall, and some in game money called Scrip. I've purchased two of the blue boxes so far and both times I got crap items even though they were blue quality so I am guessing there is a random factor as well.
