One... More... Turn...

Ok, many know of my newly found Civ3 addiction. Some times I get playing and I just have to make that, "one more turn" which turns out to be a couple dozen.

What games do that to you? It doesn't have to be turns, but could be "one more kill" = 25 more kills or "one more..." = many more. :P

Back when I had time to play Rome: Total War, I did this every time. "Just one more turn," and the next thing I know it's 4 hours, 3 or 4 battles, and 10 game years later.

Heroes of Might and Magic II and III.

Sadly, no game has consistently gripped my attention for quite some time. Maybe I'm just in one of my periodic gaming burnouts. The Rise & Rule mod for Civ3 did it for a few months. Before that, GalCiv was a brief compulsion.

The last few games that made me do that were Civ 2 and the The Sims 2

Civ 2 was the worst as I started playing around 8 am and did not get up except to use the restroom. Before I knew it it was 10 pm and I had not eaten a thing all day.

God. Heroes of Might and Magic 3 kicked my ass up, down, and sideways.

The worst of all time was Alpha Centauri. Dear lord, I lost so many nights of sleep to that bad boy...

Rome was worst recent offender.

Heroes 2, Age of Wonders (all three), Master of Magic and the Might and Magic games.

Pirates! is the last game to have done this to me.

Nothing has ever done it quite like the orignal civ.

I was hooked BAD on the Sims 2 a few weeks ago...but then I went on vacation and haven't touched it.

I'm afraid if I start it again, you'll be reading about me in the news.

I can't remember the last time this happened to me - My biggest hit of it was X-COM TFTD. I just don't remember having that feeling for awhile, at least not on a PC game.

OTOH - X-Men Legends owns me on the X-Box for the last 2 weeks.

SMAC, still to this day the hours will fly by any time I load it up. I have gotten to the point where I wont even dare start a game unless I have a couple hours with no responsibilities :D

Yeah, SMAC really nailed me. Civ III was the most recent, but it was nothing compared to SMAC back in the day.

Funny part, I loaded it up again recently and just didn't find it to be as compelling.

Edit: And I think a large part of the "one more turn" syndrome is that it you don't really see the results of your commands in turn 1 until turn 4. Plus there's some turns where you really aren't doing anything at all.

Edit 2: And that's why I really like Dominions II... once you get past the early stuff, each turn is pretty compelling. There's no "Well nothing to do except watch my dudes move around"

Oh, Rome has sucked me in for many hours past when I said "Ok, time to quit...." :D

Silent Storm is the only game since Civ 3 that gave me that syndrome, absolutely addictive...

The game that has given me the one more turn syndrome more than any other is Master of Magic.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is the most recent offender for me, though I haven't played it for awhile.

Well Call of Duty is doing that for me at the moment - but in the vein off - one more death and i'll quit :)

Only other one (but I know i've banged the drum long and hard on this one) is Soldiers MP, usually its just one more game and then another and then another lol :)

There've been loads for me, but most recently it was Knights of Honour.

Every game I've played this year. They've all been FPS type games so it's always "just this next area of conflict and I'll stop". I've taken to setting the oven timer (kitchen just outside the office) to make myself stop.

Werd.

(did I use that idiom correctly? I am pretty sure that "snap" is passe)

Lately the OO effect grabbed me and I picked up a subsim, a genre I normally stay far away from. Silent Hunter III though has had me up into the dawn, always wanting to patrol for just ONE more hour...Just ONE more merchant sunk...I've still got ONE torpedo left... :)

[edit: Prior to SHIII, it was Civ2 that kept me up into the wee hours of the morning with that "just one more turn" addictiveness]

I'm with Ironrod - it's been so many years since I've not been able to turn a game off at bed time that I don't remember what it is like. The last such games were probably Panzer General (the first) and MOO.
