URLs no longer converted to links automatically

This changed sometime in the last few months, and it's really a nuisance. Is there a reason why this had to be (say, to prevent bots or somesuch), or what's the scoop? Because as infrequently as I used this feature, I still find that I miss it whenever the situation comes up and I'd like to formally request that it go back to the way it used to be unless there's a compelling reason not to. If it's a huge amount of work or a security issue, that's fine. If it's just a tweak with no big downside...
