Christmas Music

Post by morlac »

Does anyone happen to still have Triggercut's fantastic Christmas music mixes hosted some where? I lost all of them when my old PC died :(.

in lieu of that can anyone suggest some good compilations in a similar vein to the above?

I've got most of them going back '06 (missing '09). What would be the best place to upload them to share?

You can get a lot of the previous years on Trig's other website, http://popnarcotic.com/ (hope you don't mind, Mr. Triggercut, sir)
Put "Christmas mix" in the Search box on the right, or go to the Archive box on the right and select December of whatever year.

I've spent a little time there this week, grabbing 2012 which I was missing, and getting some track listings. I've had the previous years on heavy rotation the past two weeks; Christmas isn't Christmas without those mixes. :csmile:

You probably want to check with Trig first. I don't know how he would feel about 3rd party sharing. Maybe he doesn't care, maybe he'd be upset. I'd send him a PM first, IMHO.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

No fear, I would have done that before sharing anything since they are his creations, but it's a moot point since he's got the back catalog listed at his site.

Mea culpa! This year has been a particularly frenetic December for me, not in small part because a company that I did a bunch of contract work for over the summer went Chapter 8 on me before I could get most of payments I'd invoiced them. Oh well. Thankfully, I found folks with too much money in their budgets in December that needed to blow things out, crazily managing to make up for all that in about 3 1/2 weeks. But yowza. Busy.

At any rate, yeah, let me direct link to the actual mix itself, here, that way you don't have to read my blatherings and can just get to the music.

Arise ancient thread!

I thought it might be fun to see some of everyone's favorite Christmas songs. Here's mine:

Favorite Christmas song: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." I love the melancholy darkness of this song, with original lyrics so dark Judy Garland even refused to sing them. While Frank Sinatra's updated line turns the song into more of a celebration than the original, I still find it one of the saddest holiday tunes (runner up, I'll Be Home for Christmas).

Least Favorite: "The 12 Days of Christmas." This is the "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" of Christmas music, and I've never heard a version I enjoy. Even worse, it's one of the primary parody targets of commercials and marketing, which makes it even worse.

Favorite Christmas album: This one's a tie for me between Phil Spector's "A Christmas Gift For You" and The Carpenters "Christmas Portrait." The former just has the standout girl groups and Darlene Love, and every single song on it is an absolute classic. For just putting on in the background though, I highly recommend The Carpenters album. It plays out as one long medley of classic Christmas songs, interspersed with instrumentals. It's pure perfection from beginning to end, and even if you don't fancy yourself a Carpenters fan, I can't stress enough how good this album is.

Unpopular opinion/guilty pleasure: For me, this is Paul McCartney's infamous "Wonderful Christmas Time." I actually prefer it to Lennon's "Merry Xmas (The War is Over)" because it doesn't have Yoko screeching in the background. Also Lennon's song feels more like a guilt-trip charity infomercial, while Paul's is his typical cheesy optimism which is what you need for the holidays. Paul's song also has nostalgic memories for me - I remember one night as a kid, trying desperately to get to sleep on Christmas Eve, the excitement overwhelming my drowsiness, and "Wonderful Christmas Time" was on the radio. That got locked in as a core memory, and every time I hear the song it brings back those feelings of excitedly waiting for Santa Claus.

Oh, and YK - I'm pretty sure my all-time favorite Christmas Album is still A Charlie Brown Christmas with all the songs by the Vince Guaraldi Trio!

Last time I was using Amazon Music, they also had some other, non Charlie Brown Christmas, cd's for streaming. They are pretty good.

That is deep.

Believe it or not, I had never heard this entire album until this year. I picked it up in a vinyl sale because I love Christmas records, and man was I blown away. Fantastic album start to finish.

Favorite Christmas Song: I have to agree with "Have Yourself a Merry Little Chrismas", but it has to be the Judy Garland version. She absolutely nails that song. Runner up would be Eartha Kitt singing "Santa Baby". Favorite Christmas song to sing...I've been singing "Oh Holy Night" at our Christmas Eve service for about the past 15 years straight. It is a great song for my vocal range.

Least Favorite Christmas Song: "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" Absolutely hate it.

Favorite Christmas Album: "Charlie Brown Christmas". Nothing makes me feel the Christmas holiday more than this album. Pure childhood nostalgia. My runner up would be "The Bells of Dublin" by The Chieftains.

Guilty Pleasure Song: "Doug and Bob McKenzie's Twelve Days of Christmas"

and

“We can never allow Murania to become desecrated by the presence of surface people. Our lives are serene, our minds are superior, our accomplishments greater. Gene Autry must be captured!!!” - Queen Tika, The Phantom Empire

i noted some years ago that this track appeared to have been purged from Xmas FM radio playlists (and is still true to this day).

(i think "Jingle Bells" has also been banished - likely for the sin of being 'too simple', but that's just my guess)

Favorite Song - Angels We Have Heard on High
Specifically the Bad Religion version but I love the traditional one too.

Favorite Album - Canadian Brass Christmas Album
I don't even know if that is the right now and I'm not going to go look. Runner up is the original Mannheim Steamroller Christmas album; it's cheesy and dated but I love it.

Worst Christmas Song - ?
I really don't like most of the Christmas songs. Most are ok enough in the background at least so I don't think I have a least favorite.

Favorite gimmick song: Do They Know it's Christmas? by Band Aid
Favorite song wife doesn't object to: Do You Believe in Father Christmas? by Greg Lake and the recently deceased Peter Sinfield

Most hated Xmas song: the one by Mariah Carey

For some odd reaosn, my family thinks I'm this guy.

So... every project I do around the house frequently involves some cussing, swearing, occasional screaming... (projects, like putting up the lights or things that involve tools, not just regular chores like laundry, shoveling, mowing, scooping cat litter, etc).
