My in-laws need an older pc system (DONE!)!

Post by lokiju »

Anyone have a good deal for me and the wife on something (approx) like:
  • 1 ghz cpu (Intel or AMD)
  • lower-end video and sound, maybe integrated on mobo (Geforce 2?)
  • dial-up modem
  • win 98se to XP
  • cd-rom (24x up)
  • floppy A drive
  • 10-20gb HD
  • 256mb memory
All she does is some internet searching and emailing, plus office programs. I'm open to any reasonable offers!

EDIT: WE FOUND A SYSTEM!

Just get a cheapass Dell. Having another OO'er ship you a computer (no monitor even) will cost at least 80 bucks.

Chris beat me to it. I just saw a commercial for a basic dell computer with monitor for $299. May be an option to consider.

I didn't see a Dell with less than a 2.0+ ghz cpu and way too many extras and power for her parents...

Allow me to re-explain, as I know you enjoy having certain things explained a few times.

To have an OO'er send you a computer will be 100 dollar shipping. Then they will probably want 100 bucks for the machine itself. 200 bucks for a computer.

To buy a computer from Dell that includes a monitor (and probably a flatscreen one at that!) will probably run you about 400 bucks. Maybe less.

Look, here's a Deal from monday of this week:

DellSB - Dimension 4700 with 2.8Ghz P4 520 HT, 512MB DDR2 SDRAM, 80GB S-ATA HD, and 48x CD-RW for $449 after Rebate with FREE Shipping plus FREE 15" LCD Monitor and FREE Dell 720 Printer!

So, what I'm seeing here is a pretty good computer that includes WindowsXP (unless you go pirated XP, that alone costs you 200 bucks!), a 15" flatscreen monitor AND a damn printer. For 450 bucks.

Unless you buy these people a used pos computer from your local newspaper ads, you aren't going to really get this any cheaper. I honestly cannot fathom why any person who is looking for a good cheap computer would buy anything BUT a Dell.

Shit man, look at these deals!!!

DellSB - Dimension 4700 with 2.8Ghz P4 520 HT, 256MB DDR2 SDRAM, 40GB S-ATA HD, CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive for $529 after Rebate with FREE Shipping plus FREE 19" LCD Monitor!

19" MONITOR. I bought my 18" monitor 2 years ago for almost 200 bucks more than that price! How low prices on computers (And flatscreens!) have gotten in the past 6 months is astounding to me! It boggles the mind! The age where computers are easily replacable, like a TV or a stereo have arrived! Viva la computer revolucion!

So, in conclusion, I have shown you that buying anything but a new computer (especially over the internet! Have you ever tried to ship a computer? Holy jesus, it was the worst experience I've ever had!) from Dell is crazy, and if you don't believe me, tell your wife to hit you over the head with a frying pan until you do believe me.

Thank you.

No reason to be condescending Chris. I appreciate your help though. As it turns out, I have had a couple offers thus far for less than $25 shipping via UPS.

My apologies for the jab. It was late, and the thought of some of your previous threads were in my mind.

Suffice to say, if some OO'er can manage to send you a computer for only 25 bucks... holy crap is all I have to say. I don't even know how that is possible.

Well, if that's the case, go for it. Let's just pretend I was drunk (on power) when I made my last post. ;)

We have shipped five computers for about $20 each. Three sustained damage with UPS, though only one was really serious. Make sure the CDROM drive cannot crash backward when they drop the package, which they were observed doing in at least two cases. It took out the motherboard. We shipped the last one with Fedex for $16 and it arrived in fine shape.

Hmmm, thanks Laura. I'm sure the package would have to be really, *really* secure.

Heh, no big deal, I was just being sarcastic myself. I think that you might be thinking of newer systems with all the extra weight and trimmings? If you ship a system UPS ground with only the stock heatsink for the older cpu's (which were a lot lighter than newer HS's needed to cool 1.5+ ghz), 1 cd drive, and no monitor, it helps.

I believe UPS asks for double boxing, but use plenty of packing material and secure the CDROM drive. If you do that, it should arrive in good condition.

You probably don't even need a 1 gig processor. A 500 MB should be adequate.

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/product ... l=en&s=dhs

should take you to a dell system for $299. If not, go to the dell Dimension 2400 page, and enter E-Value Code 6V590-D24F1

That is the rig i was referring to, including a 17 inch monitor, and basic setup of a 2.4GHz celeron, 256MB RAM, no burner, etc.

Oh I know they have good deals...but Cathena's parents only need a 1ghz (maybe less) system, so I thought I'd see if anyone here had an older system they wanted to sell for much cheaper than us spending $300 on stuff she doesn't need.
