Men spend more money on Games than Music

A lot of the news services have been reporting this over the past couple of days. Clearly this form of consumerism is true with most of the people who frequent these boards, but it's nice to occasionally get some confirmation that our hobby/addiction/life is not niche.

The survey was US males. DVD purchases were number one.

One thing the survey tends to gloss over is that games are more expensive than music. So wouldn't a comparable survey also conclude that men spend more money on their cars? On the other hand, one report said men spend more money on games than all music combined so I guess that would include music players but if they include music players than we get to include video cards. But I digress. Still I'm glad we beat out the music industry. As a whole they seemed a bit to elitist to me.

Curiously it was the game biz that reinvigorated my intererst in music and broadened my musical horizons. From orchestrial to ambient to new age. So, while I do spend more of my money on games, I am still a music consumer.

It makes sense. A lot of people have consoles and that's $40 or $50 for a brand new game. Most PC gamers are men, that's $40 or $50 a game. That's three CDs at $15 a piece.

That's exactly what I was thinking as soon as I clicked on this thread. I easily buy more CDs than games, but I probably spend more money on games.

The thing about the cost issue though is that while a game cost three times more than a CD, we gamers still go out and buy a game. How many CDs would you buy if they cost 50 bucks?

None. But I get more entertainment from a game then I do from a CD. I don't just sit there and listen to music, but I do sit there and play a game. Music is for background stuff, though I've always been good at being able to pay attention to music and to whatever I'm doing - such as reading, doing paperwork, that sort of stuff.

Its close with me. I spent nearly 900 on music last year and nearly that much on gaming. Had I not bought the PSP music would of been in the lead easily

i would hate to think how much i spend on lps. crazy sums. way more than i do on games anyway.

People still buy music CDs? How quaint. I spend maybe $20 per year on music downloads, $0 on movies, and $50-100 on games.

I don't buy music. The radio is fine for me when I want to listen to music. I listen to mostly talk stuff anyway. (Actually usually talk stuff off a CD that I borrowed or legit download stuff) I spend 0-$15.00/year on CD's. Games... Hmmm... Probably $150 - 250.00 at the most.

The only music CD I've brought in the last 2 years was the last U2. Don't have any interest any more. On the other hand I spend a fortune on DVDs, Consoles and PC.

I rarely buy cd's - I don't want to support the RIAA if I can help it. Most of my music is in mp3 form, some from ITunes, most... not.

I probably buy $150 worth of DVD's each year, and maybe another $500 worth of games (Cdn, so DVDs are like $30 and games are $60 or $70).

i don't buy cds, i buy vinyl. and i want to support the bands / labels who self release these records.

I'm a collector, I need the CD physically there in front of me. In that case, I prefer having everything the artist released (liner notes, lyrics and what have you) rather than just burning some mp3s.

I maybe buy 1 or 2 cds a year if it's a particular band/musician I follow. Everything else has been games and books.

While I am not into music as much as some here, I do

1) buy CDs regularly
2) listen to Internet Radio
3) Subscribe to some Internet Radio providers

I am not a part of the Ipod revolution and while I have burned some MP3s for my PDA, my number one hobby is Computer Gaming.
