[XB1X] Red Dead Redemption Remastered

Post by Cylus Maxii »

I bought an Xbox 1 X last weekend and am totally caught back up in playing RDR. The XB1 remaster is awesome in 4K. Animations are slightly dated and the game lacks a lot of the finer graphics FX. But the gameplay holds well and I'm having a ball!

Edit - the HDR/UHD stuff is pretty good and the starry sky at night is breathtaking while riding through the desert.

And... roll credits. That was as fun as the first time!

I'm pretty much completed. I'm at 80+% I think I have one stranger encounter I could do. The rest are mini games or hunting challenges that I don't really feel like tracking down. I'm not motivated by clothing unlocks or trophies.

Do any of you have comments on the "Undead Nightmare" DLC? I may give that a whirl.

About how long did it take you to do that playthrough?

That's a pretty significant time commitment. Hmm.

Arise, given that this has received a new remaster for the PS4/5 and the price on it finally dropped I decided to give it a shot. I never played the original on the PS3 or 360, so I don't have anything to compare it to. My first impression is that yes graphically you can definitely see the PS3/360 roots, but the 4k resolution combined with better draw distance and anti aliasing makes the game look good, better than I thought it would look. The 60FPS feature helps out as well.

I'm probably one of the few gamers who played and finished RDR2 prior to starting RDR1, so as I play I'm constantly wondering how lost people had to be with all the name dropping and back story if they played part 1 first.

Anyway so far so good and I think it will easily be worth the $35 I spent for a 1st time play through.

And done.

Spoiler for the ending:
Spoiler:
I definitely did not expect the ending that we got. It is fitting in a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid kind of way, but the over the top death scene and gore threw me. I did do the epilogue quest where Jack gets his revenge, so that was some nice payback.
Overall I really enjoyed the game and most of it still holds up today. Sure there are 360/PS3 roots but nothing that can't be overcome to enjoy the otherwise excellent game.

Not really. That's pretty much how every single PC gamer came at it.

...which is unfortunate. It was one of the reasons I picked up an Xbox360 back in the day and I enjoyed the original tremendously. Every time this thread is bumped I keep thinking it's confirmation that the remaster is coming to PC. Assuming it's not a trash conversion (I know R* doesn't have the best record), I would purchase and re-play in a heartbeat.

I'm not sure the remaster would do much for the PC version. The PS4 version essentially turns it into Ultra settings on a computer from 10 years ago. As far as I know they didn't update anything other than the graphics settings and they included all of the DLC. Unless there is no current PC version, then yeah good point.

Nope, no PC version. There have been rumors for a decade now but after RDR2 was released on PC, the conclusion was it wasn't worth it. But they started up again a month or so ago when some data miners found Red Dead Redemption Remastered references in an Epic games database.

I know it's not going to look like RDR2, but it sure would be nice to play it again. Maybe. More likely I'd get it and then get sad it looks like Daikatana.

There have been rumours a PC version is coming out, but nothing substantial. They removed the multiplayer from the remaster, and I'd always thought it would be neat if they pushed RDR Online to be the multiplayer (they'd recreated the entirety of RDR's worldmap afterall), but the timing never worked out, because by the time they got the remaster out they had already abandoned RDR Online. I'm surprised nobody has modded RDR 1 into RDR2's engine.

Rumors continue:
Fans noticed overnight that Red Dead Redemption’s description on the PlayStation Store had been updated to specifically call out PC upgrades. “Featuring the complete single-player experiences of both games, including bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition, Red Dead Redemption features all of the 2023 console version upgrades plus PC specific enhancements including support for increased resolutions and framerates, multiple displays, and other accessories, plus spatial surround sound,” the now deleted text read.

Just an offbeat remark but in Red Dead 2 I keep trying to kill John. Guy is tough.

I'm gonna go with... minimal effort, janky remaster followed by a broad apology from a third party developer that lays the blame with Rockstar.

Interestingly enough:
The PC version is being worked on in collaboration with British studio Double Eleven, which was founded by former Rockstar developers.
I'd hope that is good sign, but the record on these releases is not great.

I imagine they'll take the PS4/Xbox1 version and allow you to tweak the graphical settings. That's about it. So 4K with maybe a longer draw distance and better shadows.

With that said I did just play through this on the PS5 for the first time this year and I didn't think it looked that bad. The graphics are good enough that they're not a distraction.
