Turns out, it requires just OBS and one website called Gamepadviewer.com If you're on a PC, and your joystick / gamepad is active, you can get it to show on screen. Then just open OBS with website as a source, and voila, you have PIP (picture in picture) of your gameplay with your joystick movements.
This is me, trying Dakar Desert Rally, Ah Hadj 2020 Rally, in Professional Mode, with the Xbox360 gamepad overlay greenscreen'ed onto the middle. I can probably push the gamepad lower as I don't really need to show the directional pad or the right stick. And no, it's added in OBS only, I don't see it on screen when I play at all, and doesn't seem to affect the frame rate.
