[Movie] - SISU

Post by Brian »

We watched this today in a nearly empty theater. Granted, it was an early morning show on a Sunday so not normally a busy time anyway.

If you like watching Nazis getting blown up, stabbed, shot, and otherwise killed off in a variety of ways for two hours, boy have I got a movie for you.

If you haven't seen the trailer, I'd say you might get a little bit more out of the movie since it does give quite a bit away but dang this was a fun ride.

I did roll my eyes just a bit at the main character surviving some pretty impossible situations (especially at the end) but this is pretty much a fantasy movie and one that involved Nazi's getting kaputted in creative ways so just go with it.

 Why did I just know Brian would be all over this one? I had been jonesing for this one since seeing the trailer a few weeks ago. We've been discussing when and where it would show up in the movie trailers thread for a bit now. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to see this yesterday per my original plan due to some errands that ran long. But I'm hoping to catch it after work some night this week.

Considering how quickly films show up on streaming these days, I'm struggling to find a reason to go to the movies anymore. Especially since they stopped popping the popcorn fresh at the theaters near me. Now they just fill a bunch of bags and stick them in cabinets with luke warm "heating lamps". By the time I get my popcorn, it's most likely seen two or three presidential administrations. Also, they stopped using the good butter and they just give you the option of using a modified grease gun that rarely works. It also removes my ability to ask for butter in the middle. These things are destroying my belief that America is a great country. I bet in Uzbekistan they get better popcorn. Sometimes I just want to show up at the theater with my own industrial grade popcorn making machine. Just leave it in the aisle next to me and then I can get fresh popcorn with real popcorn butter whenever I like. Of course, this means a few people will be most likely crushed to death while I'm maneuvering "the Taste Oasis" (my nickname for this setup) into position. But let's be honest, those deaths are meaningless when compared to the satisfaction and enjoyment I'll be getting from all this.

Now, let's talk about the lack of frozen coke machines in modern theaters....

I'm a simple man, really. Give me a fine meal, a good woman, and Nazi's catching anti-tank mines to the face and I'll have a wonderful time.

You're probably like me. Scouring the release list of every Fantastic Fest each year to get an idea of what to look for. :)

I worked for a theater in Burlington, VT in 1990. We made popcorn on Sundays. The popcorn was bagged and stored upstairs for the week. When the bins would get low, we'd go grab a bag. I'm impressed that your theater was making it fresh so recently.

Sounds like you need to shop for a new theater.

The theater near me that closed during the pandemic, then recently reopened, was my gold standard. They had a giant bar, and they made all their popcorn fresh. They never batted an eye when I would ask for "butter in the middle" too (even when I kept making the same joke that they could keep whatever they found in my pockets after they discovered my body when cleaning up after a film). When that closed, I was forced to look at other theaters. And I discovered that all the ones near me served that same crappy, stale popcorn and had that same, crappy grease gun that would only work on alternate Wednesdays.

So it was with great joy when I saw that the theater I mentioned above had reopened. Only to see that joy turn to ash in my mouth as I realized they had purchased that damn luke warm heating lamp cabinet and stocked it with the same crappy, stale popcorn the others had.

Anyone know the going price on a Taste Oasis?

I like freshly popped (and butter/salted to my taste) popcorn so much that I bought myself a theater style popcorn machine.

However, since I've been intermittent fasting since the start of the year, I can only eat between the hours of 5am and 1pm which means I only get to make my own popcorn on the weekends.

So about twice a month I fire it up and make myself a big batch of fresh popcorn, some for Saturday and some for Sunday (which never seems to actually last until Sunday).

Since Saturday also is the day when we catch up on any streaming shows, it tends to work out pretty well.

what's the best popcorn maker? i switched over to popping corn in a sauce pan with coconut oil, then dousing it in a buttery oil which is like the oil used in theaters.

I use a Great Northern Popcorn Machine along with their branded popcorn portion packs.

Makes pretty much exactly the right amount of popcorn for me with just enough left over for the wife.

I did have to tape a little extra weight to the flap/lid to keep it from scattering un-popped kernels all over but it makes some pretty tasty popcorn. I salt mine afterwards since the wife doesn't like salt so we serve her first and sprinkle a bit of sweet Kettle-Corn flavoring and then I salt/butter my helping.

One of the theaters in town's slogan is that they use real butter for all their popcorn. I can confirm they do and they make all their popcorn as needed. They are locally owned and don't charge ridiculous prices for food/drinks. There's also a one screen theater in a small town about 15 minutes from me that we try to frequent. Popcorn is good and the owners are local to the town. Every showing the owner comes out and talks to everyone and gives away free stuff.

On topic, this movie looks like my kind of thing. Thanks for the heads up.

Okay, saw it after work today.

It’s absurd, has a paper thin story, and is full of two dimensional villains.

But it’s fun. It’s also beautifully shot. There are some truly great vistas on display throughout the film.

The lead actor has a face that was made to convey rage. I need to go look for his other acting work. Making his part a (mostly) non speaking one was the wise choice.

But again, the popcorn was crap. :x
